Details
The tour begins in Maspalomas/Playa del Inglés at 09:00. First we’ll drive North on the motorway.
On this tour we have some short photo stops with great views in addition to those detailed in the itinerary.
• Our first viewpoint located at the northern coast of the island and offers beautiful views overlooking Las Palmas and the north coast.
• The second stop on our excursion is a private banana plantation owned by our family. In the past in Gran Canaria, banana production was of great importance, which has gradually declining with the rise of tourism. Nevertheless, it still plays an important role in the local economy. On the plantation you can see and learn facts and curiosities about bananas that maybe you don’t know. Do you know when and how often a banana is harvested in a year? And is it really a tree?
• Then we’ll head from the coast into the interior of the island.
Villa de Moya (Villa – small town) is also known as the “Green Villa” as it’s more of a verdant interior municipality than a coastal one and the rest of the island. The main street of Moya is a small cosy and quiet area. In the town centre we’ll find the impressive church, built on the edge of a large ravine (valley) on top of the cliffs. In this town, we can also show you some unique details of typical, traditional Canary life.
• Upon driving to the second viewpoint you will observe the magnificent green and fertile landscape that surrounds the road.
At our stop, a charming and picturesque little village greets us. Its beautiful valleys are often shrouded in mist, showing a picture of a mystical village away from civilization. This area is one of the greenest regions of the island, characterized by endless tranquility. Agriculture is still the most important work for the people who live here.
• Our route progresses towards the volcanic crater. If you have never seen inside a volcano crater this is one to see. Its diameter of approximately 300 meters does not make it one of the largest volcanoes but gives you a good idea of the power this planet has to offer. Have you ever walked on the edge of a volcano? Here you can do it, it’s a fantastic experience! And the viewpoint on the top of the volcano, with one of the most attractive panoramic views of the north side, is like a splendid watchtower from which to observe (in clear weather) the entire north of Gran Canaria 1350 meters above sea level.
• Our next destination is Artenara, which is the highest altitude mountain village on the island and also one of the oldest. For about 1000 years before the Spanish conquest there were settlements in this area. Artenara is an ideal place to see the way of life of the native Canary Islanders. Clinging to the mountainside, this peculiar village is doubtless one of the most spectacular of the island with many of its houses built in the caves dating from prehistoric times. It’s all about caves… Viewpoints, caves and a wonderful panorama await us overlooking central Gran Canaria. And a Christ statue with widespread arms, reminiscent of the famous Rio de Janeiro figure, also welcomes us in this town. Here we’ll also visit the Museum of Cave Houses.
This museum consists of 7 caves, which have been furnished with tools, objects, handicrafts and food of the people who used to live here, providing a real insight into the lifestyle of that time. The entry to the cave museum is free (donations can be given).
• The impressive Tamadaba Natural Park remains an area unaffected by humans on the island of Gran Canaria. This area has the largest pine forest on the island which offers many activities for nature lovers, such as hiking possibilities. We need only 10 minutes walking through the pine forest. From 1000 meters above the sea level the view is absolutely breathtaking. If we have clear weather, we can enjoy spectacular views of the western coast of Gran Canaria, the ocean, and the Teide (Tenerife). On misty days the pine forest changes into an enchanted fairytale scene, with trees covered in lichen, which hangs from the branches like greenish-yellow veils.
• The next stop of our tour will be one of the reservoirs. Together with two other reservoirs in the neighborhood this is a beautiful hidden gem of the island at the foot of the pine forests. The surrounding countryside is magnificent, even if the level of the lake is sometimes low due to lack of rain.
• From the reservoir we’ll have a longer road section back to Maspalomas. So we’ll interrupt our trip at an interesting natural pool. This is located on the north coast of the island and the most popular beach for local bathers in this area.
• Plus many more great views and landmarks along the way.
Relax during the journey back to your hotel, where the tour concludes.
