Details, Itinerary

The tour begins in Maspalomas / Playa del Inglés at 08:45. (Meeting point right in front of your accommodation.)

On this day, with the help of our excursion route we will trace a historic path back through time, from today’s modern city to Columbus times and the pre-Columbus indigenous people. We will explore Las Palmas in detail, we’ll get to know the present and past of the capital. In addition to all this, we get an insight into the natural beauties of Gran Canaria and discover some intriguing details of the island’s diversity and uniqueness. On this excursion day you can also acquire a wide range of knowledge about Gran Canaria, as the tour is an ideal combination of culture, history and natural sights of the island.

➣ During the tour we invite you to an alfresco picnic where you can taste some of the products of Canarian gastronomy. (This is not a main meal, we have selected picnic treats and snacks in the basket, which are often found on the table of the locals.)

On this day you can expect mostly simple urban walks, in some places with stairs and moderately hilly areas. It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes because there will also be a section on our trip where we will walk on uneven terrain.

1

The capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is the most populous city in the Canary Islands. We will spend around 4 hours here, visiting important and well known sights as well as secluded, hidden places that are not included in travel guides. We will take you to unique areas that are not viewpoints, not tourist destinations, however, the panorama of the capital is a must-see. You will also see the city from a perspective that most people only know in photos.

Our first stop offers a great view to the old town and the Atlantic Ocean.

2

Then we will explore the historical old town together. Or you can choose to do this individually, according to your own interests. You will have 1.5 hours free time to stroll through the quiet streets of the Vegueta quarter, and/or visit the museum. Here we can get to know the characteristic colonial architecture that takes us back to the 16th century, as well as the Casa de Colón museum (Columbus House). The center of the capital, the Plaza Santa Ana was the first main square in Las Palmas, built in the late 15th century. Here we will find the Cathedral of Santa Ana as well as the dog statues that guard the cathedral and also symbolize the origin of the name of the Canary Islands. We also visit the very first market hall in the Canary Islands (closed on Sundays). The primary offer of the market is fresh local vegetables, fruits (tasting is almost mandatory) and fish. Those who prefer to go shopping will also have the opportunity to explore one of the city’s main shopping and commercial districts. There is a wide range of shops of all kinds, including craft shops and big-name boutiques. The area is also full of outdoor cafés and restaurants. If the tour is on a Sunday, the majority of shops will be closed except for the first Sunday of the month. However, on Sundays you can also take time to explore the products of the traditional Sunday handicraft market in the old town, and admission to the Columbus House museum is free. On the other days of the week the ticket costs 4 euros.

3

Shortly after the founding of Las Palmas, the very first fortress in the province was also built. This happened more than 500 years ago. Today we can see a rebuilt, renovated fortress. But how can a fortress that was originally built on a reef stand on land today? The answer is quite simple… you’ll find out quickly for sure.

4

Our next excursion destination offers a wonderful panoramic view of the northern part of Las Palmas and the port. Then we will check out the oldest and one of the most exclusive hotels in Gran Canaria. The hotel’s guests included names such as the Spanish royal family, Sir Winston Churchill, Agatha Christie or the FC Barcelona team. Nor can we miss a stroll through the most beautiful green spaces in the city, which can also be described as one of the jewels of the capital. Pay attention to detail while walking through the park and you will discover numerous fountains and find plenty of palm trees, dragon trees and strelitzia, as well as various native plants.

5

Finally, let’s take a look at the city’s most famous, largest and most important beach, Las Canteras, also referred to as one of Europe’s most beautiful urban beaches. 3 kilometers of golden sandy beach and a 4-kilometer promenade boast countless local restaurants and cafes. An ideal place to relax and for a refreshing drink on the seafront.

6

The tour continues towards the stunning crater of volcanic origin that may have formed about 4-5000 years ago. The nearly 600 meter high peak (1900 ft) offers stunning views down into the crater. From here you can also enjoy a great view of the east coast and the ocean as well as the city of Las Palmas and across the oldest golf course of all Spain. The area is ideally suited for viticulture and is home to the largest wine-growing area in Gran Canaria. We’ll show you the crater not only from a perspective known to everyone, but also from a lesser known side. The crater itself was not formed by a volcanic eruption. Then how did it? And why is there a house at the bottom of a crater? We’ll tell you that too.

7

The next stop of our tour are the indigenous caves. It is a larger system of caves of indigenous peoples who lived before the Spanish conquerors, an exciting piece of local history. Much is still unclear about indigenous people, as is the exact role of this place. It is supposed to have been a ritual place and was probably also used as accommodation. Here we can discover the functionality of one or two elements in the caves ourselves!
As there is no solid pavement on this section it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes here. We do not recommend the entire walk to those with restricted mobility due to uneven, rock-strewn areas.

8

Our last stop is Barranco de Guayadeque, which with its endless tranquility is the perfect opposite of the hustle and bustle of the big city. In this grand valley there are many cave houses that are still inhabited today. There are also cave restaurants, souvenir shop and a small cave chapel. This valley gives an interesting insight into the life of the Guanches, the aborigines and at the same time the people who live here today. We will explore several parts of this stunning valley together.
Could you imagine life in such calm…?

Plus many more great views and landmarks along the way.

Relax during the journey back to your hotel, where the tour concludes.
