Details, Itinerary
On this tour we will discover the most important and well-known sights of Gran Canaria.
Through the little towns, we gain insight into the culture, history, architecture of the island, and the lifestyle and customs of the Canarian people. We will cross the island through the highest mountain peaks, therefore we can also admire the island’s unique natural beauties. However, we can also observe a huge contrast of vegetation between the northern and southern parts of the island.
➣ During the tour we invite you to a cozy alfresco picnic where you can taste some of the products of Canarian gastronomy. (This is not a main meal, we have selected picnic treats and snacks in the basket, which are often found on the table of the locals.)
On this day you can expect mostly simple urban walks. Wearing warmer clothing during the winter months (November-March) is highly recommended because at altitudes above 1,500 meters (4900 feet) we can also encounter temperatures below 10 ºC, which feels even colder on a cloudy, windy day (while in Maspalomas it is 25-30 ºC).
The tour begins in Maspalomas / Playa del Inglés at 09:00. (Meeting point right in front of your accommodation.)
The first stop on our excursion is the third largest town on the island, the town of Arucas.
Here you can choose between these two options:
Option 1: Getting to know the old town of Arucas.
The symbol of the town, the imposing neo-Gothic church of San Juan Bautista, rises almost like a fortress over the old town. It is also often referred to as the Cathedral of Arucas, although this church is not a cathedral. But then why is it called that? Of course, this will be revealed on our tour. The old town itself is not that big, yet there are many interesting things to explore here. The neoclassical streets, the atmosphere of an old traditional canary house, a beautiful park with various native and interesting flowers and plants. Finally a brief walk in the past with a collection of vintage photographs that show how the town was about 100 years ago.
Option 2: Visit the Arehucas rum factory.
They will present the process and history of rum production, after which you will have the opportunity to taste 21 kinds of rum and liqueur. The factory visit takes place in groups with a local guide. You can choose your language preference, English, Spanish or German, before commencement of your tour. Entry fee 5 euros.
(If you choose this option, the next hours are guaranteed to be fun:-) But also keep in mind that we have several hours on serpentine roads ahead of us!)
[ Then we leave the ocean behind and we'll head into Gran Canaria’s heartland. ]
Lasting experiences are found in the details. A special coffee drink, perfumes, atmosphere and much more awaits you. According to legend, a vision of the Virgin Mary appeared on a pine tree in a mountain village in 1481. (Hence the name of the island's patron saint, Nuestra Señora del Pino - “Our Lady of the Pine.”). Then over the years more and more pilgrims began to arrive in this small town. The inhabitants first built a chapel in honor of Mary, which was later replaced by a church. Finally, a basilica was built in 1767, which we also visit on this excursion.
The town has now become the religious center of Gran Canaria and the basilica is home to the island's patron saint. Here we will also find one of the most beautiful streets in Gran Canaria. The traditional Canarian wooden balconies are particularly impressive. And if you also want to know what purpose these balconies were originally built for and why we never see people on them, then this location will be the best place to get the answer. A short walk through the romantic streets with their post-colonial architecture will surely help you to experience the peaceful and stress-free life of the Canarian people and to feel the serenity of the authentic Canarian atmosphere.
Winding roads lead us through the green mountain landscape to our first viewpoint at an altitude of nearly 1000 meters. Here we will have a short photo break. There are great views over the valleys towards the capital and we can also observe the important role agriculture plays in the life of the people in the northern part of the island.
At an altitude of almost 1600 meters (5250 ft), a cross marks the geographical center of Gran Canaria. (This is just a theoretical center, the real center of the island is elsewhere.)
This place is bordered by historical roads that were also used by the aborigines centuries ago, and is now a popular hiking and leisure destination among locals. It is also home to the highest hotel on the island. The magnificent view makes us feel as if we are floating between the mountains of the island.
The typical summer weather in Las Palmas and the northern region has received a peculiar, distinctive name in the past. While admiring the scenery you can also meet the lovely eponymous subject here.
We have arrived in the heart of the island. Before we continue our exploration, we will take a little rest and invite you to a delicious tapas picnic.
The next settlement on our tour was the first in the Canary Islands to appear on the prestigious list of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain. This beautiful mountain village is set in a huge volcanic basin in the heart of Gran Canaria. This place provides an ideal view to the iconic monoliths Roque Nublo and Roque Bentayga, striking symbols of Gran Canaria. If we ask local people in Gran Canaria what there is in the village, they will tell us “almonds”. So we can not miss a visit to the island's most famous confectionists where you can find a variety of cakes made with almonds. The combination of the magnificent view and the uniquely delicious cakes will ensure that our trip to this place will linger in your memory for a long time.
Following our drive toward Roque Nublo we will make a stop at our second viewpoint. If we have clear weather we can enjoy a "little" surprise here, the highest peak in Spain. According to geologists, the peak, which is about 110 kilometers (62 miles) away, was probably not seen from here in the first phase of the island's history. Can you guess why not?
The Roque Nublo is Gran Canaria's biggest symbol, a huge basalt rock monolith almost 70 meters high which arose as a result of volcanic activity and erosion. Here we will also see what special rock formations nature can create. And when you hear their names, you're sure to smile at how apt they are.
On this tour we DO NOT walk up to the top! (This is part of our Tour #03.) With a little walk you can enjoy the beautiful landscape and view, close to the highest point of the island, at an altitude of about 1600 meters (5250 feet).
The excursion continues to Fataga. As we progress along this route you will observe a gradual change between the two completely different faces of the island, from the verdant north into the barren landscape of the arid south. This big difference is due to a surprisingly simple thing.
This particular little village nestles in the valley of the thousand palms, in a picturesque setting of tall cliffs, palms and fruit trees. Fataga is characterized by beautifully preserved, white-painted houses, narrow little streets and colorful flowers. A little walk among the charming rural houses is a must!
And finally, how about a short but exciting serpentine ride at the edge of the cliffs? We arrive at our last viewpoint, a breathtaking conclusion to our tour. Here you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view. The impressive central mountains of the island, the Maspalomas dunes hidden in the distance and the Atlantic Ocean.
– Plus many more great views and landmarks along the way.
– Relax during the journey back to your hotel, where the tour concludes.
